CNC Machining Service

C360 Free-Cutting Brass CNC Machining

C360 is one of the most machinable brass alloys we run, and most of our brass work is turned. We machine C360 parts from customer drawings on CNC lathes, automatic lathes, Swiss-type lathes and turn-mill machines, with inspection to the tolerances on the drawing.

If your brass part must hold tight diameters, clean threads or repeatable features across a production run, send us the drawing and we will review it before quoting.

How C360 Behaves on the Machine

C360 cuts with short, broken chips and low cutting force, which lets us run higher spindle speeds and feed rates than most other copper alloys. That means shorter cycle times, better surface finish on turned diameters and less tool wear on small-diameter work. It also suits parts with many small features, such as cross-drilled holes, fine grooves and threaded sections.

The trade-off is that C360 contains lead, and its ductility is lower than that of alloys like C260 or C110. Thin walls and long slender sections can move under cutting load, so we check fixturing and support early, especially on Swiss-type work where the part is guided close to the cutting tool.

Machining Processes for C360 Parts

Process selection depends on part geometry, diameter range and annual volume. We do not default every brass part to one machine.

Process Equipment Typical C360 Parts Listed Precision
Automatic turning 30 automatic lathes Pins, small turned fittings, precision connectors ±0.02 mm
Swiss-type turning 10 Swiss-type lathes (4 five-axis, 2 six-axis, 4 other) Slender pins, small-diameter bushings, miniature components ±0.01 mm
CNC turning 43 CNC lathes, 7 gang-type lathes Shafts, sleeves, bushings, collars ±0.01 mm
Turn-mill machining 15 CNC turn-mill machines Parts with cross holes, flats or off-axis features in one setup ±0.01 mm
CNC milling 25 three-axis, 1 four-axis, 8 five-axis machining centers Brackets, flats, slotted parts, multi-face components ±0.01 mm
Screw machining 20 screw machines Screws, threaded fasteners ±0.05 mm

For high-volume turned parts, Swiss-type and automatic turning usually give the most stable cost per piece. For lower volumes or parts with features on several faces, turn-mill and milling setups often reduce handling and fixture changes.

Inspection and Tolerance Control

Brass parts are often used in assemblies where a few hundredths of a millimeter change the fit. We set the inspection plan from the drawing. Critical features are measured on the CMM or optical system and recorded; general dimensions are checked with calipers, micrometers or gauges at the frequency agreed for the order.

Inspection reports and first-article data can be provided on request.

  • 3D Dimensional Checks

Coordinate measuring machine for dimensional and geometric verification.

  • Optical Profiling

Five 2D optical systems for profiles, hole positions and small features.

  • Concentricity and Finish

Concentricity instrument for turned components and surface roughness tester for finish verification.

  • Hardness and Gauging

Rockwell hardness testing, thread ring and plug gauges from M1.0 to M16, pin gauges, micrometers and height gauges.

Deciding Whether C360 Fits Your Part

C360 is usually the right choice when the part is turned or small-featured, needs good machinability at production volume, and does not have to be formed or exposed to harsh corrosive conditions. It is widely used for connectors, valve components, fittings and instrument parts.

C260 or C270 brass

Better if the part must be bent, formed or deep-drawn after machining, or if a lead-free composition is preferred for that operation.

C110 copper

Preferred when electrical or thermal conductivity is the main requirement.

Stainless steel

Suitable when strength, wear resistance or corrosion performance in aggressive environments is critical.

Aluminum

Suitable when weight is the main concern and the part does not need the wear or electrical properties of brass.

Lead content matters for some markets and applications. If your product must comply with RoHS, drinking-water rules or customer-specific substance restrictions, tell us before ordering. We can discuss material options and provide material documentation based on what your project requires.

Typical C360 Parts We Machine

If your part is not on this list but is made from brass and turned or milled, send the drawing anyway. We will confirm which process we would use and flag any manufacturability issues.

  • Turned pins, shafts and spacers
  • Threaded bushings and fittings
  • Connector bodies and contact housings
  • Valve stems, nozzles and small hydraulic or pneumatic components
  • Instrument parts and miniature turned components
  • Brackets and housings with milled features
  • Screws and threaded fasteners on screw machines
