Passivation for precision CNC parts
We review stainless steel passivation requirements alongside the part’s material grade, application, surface condition and customer-specified standard. Our goal is to define a suitable machining and finishing scope, including inspection and records, before an order is placed.
From shafts and bushings to housings, connectors and drawing-based components, we assess each request against its actual requirements—not a one-size-fits-all process.
Share your material grade, applicable standard, quantity and drawing for an initial evaluation.
What passivation does
The right treatment starts with the part
Passivation is a chemical treatment used on stainless steel to remove surface contaminants—particularly free iron—that can contribute to corrosion and support formation of the material’s passive, corrosion-resistant surface. It is not a coating, and it cannot correct pitting, unsuitable material selection or design issues.
The result depends on the alloy, prior machining, cleanliness, surface condition, geometry and acceptance criteria. We consider these factors before confirming how passivation may fit into the manufacturing scope. We also review cleaning and handling instructions to address concerns about residues and cross-contamination.
Corrosion concerns
We review the material and intended environment against the requested treatment and acceptance criteria.
Surface cleanliness
We consider preparation, handling and customer instructions as part of the process plan.
Complete records
We confirm required tests, reports and certificates with you before accepting the order.
Our review process
Five checks before we confirm the scope
We assess passivation as a project-specific requirement. If information is unclear or acceptance details are missing, we raise the question before production rather than assume a route or test.
-
01 / Material
Grade and traceability
We review the specified stainless steel grade and any material certification or traceability requirements.
-
02 / Application
Use and environment
We consider the component’s function and whether it serves industrial, medical or precision equipment.
-
03 / Surface
Condition and geometry
Machining marks, previous finishing, cleanliness and part geometry can affect preparation and treatment.
-
04 / Standard
Specification and revision
ASTM A967/A967M or AMS 2700 may be referenced; the customer-approved requirement governs the project.
-
05 / Evidence
Inspection and records
We confirm requested checks, reports and process or material records against the agreed scope.
Machining capabilities
Machining and finishing, reviewed together
We manufacture custom components to customer drawings and technical specifications. Depending on geometry and project needs, our listed equipment includes:
- 3-axis CNC machining centers for brackets, housings and mounting plates.
- 5-axis CNC machines for complex profiles and multi-sided parts.
- CNC and automatic lathes for shafts, sleeves, bushings and small turned parts.
- Turn-mill and Swiss-type lathes for combined turned and milled features, and small, slender or complex components.
Achievable tolerances depend on the drawing, material, geometry and inspection method. We assess requirements during quotation rather than treating machine-category figures as a guarantee for every feature.
Inspection resources
Drawing-based checks and agreed evidence
Our inspection resources include a coordinate measuring machine, optical measuring systems, height measuring instruments, a surface roughness tester, hardness tester and precision dimensional gauges. These support dimensional and surface checks, but do not by themselves establish compliance with every passivation acceptance test.
Specify the evidence you need
If your requirement calls for a particular verification or corrosion test, process certificate or other record, include it in your RFQ. We will confirm what can be provided and how it fits the project scope before accepting the order.
Quality systems
Quality support for demanding projects
Our quality management systems are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 13485, AS9100D, ISO 14001 and IATF 16949.

Certification scope and applicability depend on the specific project. For medical or aerospace work, we review the customer-approved specification, revision, inspection plan and documentation requirements against relevant certified scope, customer approval and purchase requirements. Certification does not replace your qualification or approval process.
Project fit
For parts with defined corrosion or cleanliness requirements
Passivation may be appropriate when a stainless steel component needs a specified post-machining treatment. We review prototypes, repeat orders and production requests according to the material, acceptance criteria and confirmed manufacturing scope.
- Industrial shafts, bushings, sleeves and housings
- Precision connectors and small turned components
- Medical-device components, subject to approved requirements and certification scope
- Aerospace supply-chain parts, subject to customer specifications and applicable approvals
- Repeat production requiring consistent drawing-based inspection and records
Details that help us evaluate your request
Passivation is not automatically necessary for every stainless steel part. To review process suitability and acceptance, please provide:
- Stainless steel grade and condition
- Drawing revision and critical dimensions
- Part application and expected operating environment
- Required passivation standard and revision
- Cleaning, handling or packaging instructions
- Inspection reports, certificates and traceability records required
- Quantity, order frequency and target schedule
Common questions
Passivation project considerations
Which passivation standard should I specify?
Commonly referenced specifications may include ASTM A967/A967M or AMS 2700. The right requirement depends on your part, use and customer approval. Please provide the applicable standard, revision and acceptance criteria; we do not assume one standard fits every project.
How do you address corrosion, contamination and incomplete records?
We review material and surface condition, cleaning and handling instructions, specified acceptance tests, and required reports or certificates before confirming the scope. We will clarify what can be provided rather than assume that an unrequested test or record is included.
Can you review medical or aerospace components?
We can review the drawing and requirements for feasibility. Medical and aerospace projects must be assessed against the customer-approved specifications, relevant certified scope, purchase requirements and any applicable customer approvals.
